Learn more about the country and popular services

Kazakhstan, a country with a population of about 19.7 million people (as of 2024), is one of the leaders in Central Asia in terms of digitalization. Telephony and social media play an important role in the daily lives of Kazakhstanis, facilitating communication in this large country.

Telephony of Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan has a developed telecommunications infrastructure that is progressing rapidly. In 2024, 26.24 million mobile connections were activated in the country, which is 133.1% of the population, as many people use multiple SIM cards. Mobile Internet speeds have increased significantly: in 2024, the median speed reached 35.49 Mbps (+68.6% year-on-year), and fixed-line speeds reached 51.41 Mbps (+13.1%). In 2022, Kazakhstan started the implementation of 5G, and by 2027, it is planned to cover 80% of the population.

Major telecommunications companies:

  • Kazakhtelecom is the largest state-owned operator. It provides fixed-line communications, internet and television, controlling infrastructure such as cables and exchange nodes.
  • Kcell is a leading mobile operator that launched 5G in 2022. It offers a wide range of services, including 4G and VoLTE
  • Tele2-Altel is another major operator that also started 5G rollout in 2022. It focuses on affordable tariffs and expanding coverage.
  • Beeline Kazakhstan is a popular operator with extensive 4G coverage that actively competes in the market due to flexible tariffs.

The government supports the development of telecommunications, in particular through programs to connect rural areas to broadband. However, Kazakhstan faces limitations: the authorities periodically block or slow down the Internet during protests, as was the case in 2022.

Social Media

In January 2024, there were 14.1 million active social media users in Kazakhstan, accounting for 71.5% of the population. Kazakhstanis spend a significant amount of time on social media, using it for entertainment, news, and business. In 2023, 92% of the population had access to the Internet, with 65.62% of traffic coming from mobile devices.

Popular platforms:

  • TikTok is the leader with 14.1 million users (as of March 2024). It is popular among young people (16–25 years old) for entertainment and content creation.
  • Instagram is the second most popular with 12.5 million users. Most of the audience is female (75%), aged 18-34. It is used for fashion, beauty, and shopping.
  • YouTube - has 10.6 million active users. It is popular for viewing educational content, tech reviews, and beauty vlogs.
  • Telegram - has 12.5 million users. It is used for news, business, and communication, especially in professional circles.
  • VKontakte - a popular platform with a 9.46% share of visits (2023). It is often used for social movements and communication.

Facebook (21.01% of the share of visits in 2023) and Pinterest (29.28%) also have a significant audience, especially for traffic to other sites.

Kazakhstan has a high level of telephony thanks to operators such as Kazakhtelecom, Kcell, Tele2-Altel and Beeline, which are actively implementing 4G and 5G. Social media is dominated by TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Telegram, which are used for entertainment, communication, and business. Despite progress, restrictions on internet access and censorship remain challenges to the country's digital development.
